Food for thought

I caught this post at one of my favorite sites (moneysavingmom) and thought it was good enough to share. We are already implementing many of these tips and building our own stock pile of food storage at home. These are easy ways to be prepared.

Guest Post: Building an "Emergency Fund" of Food
by Hannah and Abby from Safely Gathered In

Syndicated radio host Dave Ramsey advises his listeners to set up an emergency fund that consists of three to six months of living expenses. The fund is for "just in case" situations like job loss and medical or auto emergencies--basically a source of cash for unexpected tough times.

Along this same line of thinking, it is also smart to consider setting up an emergency fund of food. Thinking of your long-term food needs is not only for "gloom-and-doom" situations. By systematically storing food that your family enjoys eating, you will be able to purchase the food on your plan when it is at rock-bottom prices, learn to plan and budget better, and give your family peace of mind.

Building a three month supply of food can seem daunting at first—it is a lot of food! But it can be done. The first step is to plan meals you want to store. It won't do you much good to just store random food items.

Make a menu plan and post it on your pantry door for easy reference. Ideally, you want to plan meals that only use non-perishable items so your food storage isn't ruined if you lose electricity and your freezer food thaws. Spaghetti, rice and beans, chicken pot pie, and vegetarian taco soup are some excellent meals that can be made completely from pantry (non-perishables) items.

Once your meals are planned out, write down all the ingredients you need on one "Master List." Each time you visit the grocery store, look at what's on sale and stock up reasonably on the things from your list. Or, you can just buy one extra full meal every time you shop. Soon you will have a week of extra meals, then a month, and so on.

A supply of food should be built up slowly according to both your budget and plan. Do not go into debt building your food storage—that's neither frugal or responsible. Don't "hoard" food either. Only buy what you need and what your family will enjoy eating. Then use it when you need it.

The third important step in creating your emergency fund of food is rotation. Even non-perishable food can spoil. This is why it's so important to "store what you eat and eat what you store."

In order to avoid wasting the money that you spent purchasing the non-perishable food items, pay close attention to expiration dates, and devise a system for rotation. For example, if you have cans of veggies or fruit in your food storage, eat them. Then, when you replace the items you've taken out, put the new food in the back so the old food gets eaten first. Food storage is a constant cycle of buying, storing, rotating, eating, and replacing.

Do we only serve food storage meals to our families? Of course not! We like to try new food storage recipes weekly and we also like to eat a lot of fresh foods in the summertime. We rotate our supply, usually eating at least one food storage meal per week, sometimes more. Because the foods are non-perishable, there is not any pressure to use them immediately. At the same time, if we don't feel like cooking what we had planned for dinner, we can fall back on one of the food storage classics, and no one will complain.

Just recently, Abby and her family had a tight month financially with some car issues. The one expense they could confidently cut was their food budget. She stopped going to the grocery store completely except to get a few things like milk, eggs, and a little produce. Did they starve? Not at all! They ate delicious, nutritious meals. In fact, no one even noticed she hadn't been shopping as long as they didn't look in her fridge.

Remember, don't be overwhelmed when it comes to building an emergency fund of food--take it one step at a time. Start by making small goals like storing one week of food, then two weeks, and so on Then when you hit those bumps in life, feeding your family will be something you don't have to think about.

Black Friday shopping at CVS

Yes, I was crazy enough to go shopping before it was bright and early. I got most of what I wanted. I got lucky at CVS. I chose not to go on Thanksgiving and although most stores opened at 5am mine didn't. I showed up when they opened their doors and was greeted my a very friendly manager. It was because of him that my trip was successful.

I got:
Playtex tampons 3.99
Schick quatro razor 7.99
remote 6.99
covergirl foundation 5.99
4 diet coke 2 liters 1.79 ea
Total 32.12

coupons used:
5/30 cvs mailer
3/15 cvs
1/1 playtex
2/1 schick
1/1 covergirl
2 bogo diet coke 3.58
13 ecb's
total oop 3.76
ecb's earned 21.99!!! That might be my highest yet!

I had to scramble to make it work b/c they were out of the soleil razors and the remotes but the kind manager substituted another remote for me and manually gave me ECB's for it!!!That's unheard of. Speaking of, most if not all CVS stores should be able to manually reprint your ECB's if they don't print correctly now. And another bonus is that these ecb's round up!

CVS: hidden deal and battery fix

There's a hidden money maker deal this week with the glade candles. The ECB deal is buy $10 get 5 ecb's.

buy refill 3.99
warmer 6.99
total 11.98

then use SIC buy refill get warmer free (-6.99)
3.99 oop or w/ ecb's and get 5 ecb's!

or you can get 4 glass scents 2.50 ea
use 2 bogo sic
2 1/1 sic
total oop $3 get 5 ecb's

*keep in mind that most glade products have coupons inside of them also*

Also, there have been some problems with people trying to work the duracell deal using the 5/2 cvs tearpad coupon. Most people give this coupon first or second (if you have a 3/15) then what happens is the computer won't take any other coupons or ecb's. There are 2 easy fixes to this problem. The first is simply to have the cashier rescan your cvs card. Or you can give this coupon last (even after ecb's). I think the first would be the best way personally b/c ecb's can't be readjusted after another coupon is scanned. Your cashier might not even know that little fix. But all coupons over $5 will beep after you scan the 5/2 cvs battery coupon.

Yankee Candle B2G2

If you love the smell of Yankee Candles here's a good sale for you. Now thru Nov. 30th buy any 2 large jar candles and get 2 free! If you're shopping online use code XF81122 and remember to shop thru ebates and get $5 for signing up and more $$ back with every purchase!

Go here to print your coupon. These are great christmas gifts!

I heart cvs

Here's my score for the week!

2 Listerine cool agent blue 3.99 ea
2 Palmolive dish soap 1.49 ea
1 Colgate w/ toothbrush 3.49
total w/tax 15.14

coupons used:
2 .25/1 Palmolive sic
2 1/1 Listerine pc
1.50/1 Colgate pc
8 ecb's
total oop .69! GOT 9 ecb's back!

This is my revised plan. I was going to get some ibuprofen w/ 3 ecb's but it didn't work in my favor so I switched. That's why it's always good to bring you coupons with you so you can easily switch gears if they're out of something. I was easily able to switch, not that I needed toothpaste but I could definitely use the toothbrush.

There was a new cashier who didn't know my (and my brilliance) she simply said "you go girl"
Back at ya!

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Have you been to Kroger yet?

As I am trying to shake off the news of my Uncle I decided what better cure that to shop! I ventured to Kroger for a few deals that I still had coupons for. Again the cashier looks at me in awe.

I would have been under $10 but I had to get a few extra's for David's class. Those were the things w/o coupons of course b/c you can never find coupons for things you need on the fly. Also keep in mind that their bonus coupons make a difference. You could NOT have done this at Walmart!

What am I going to do with all this you ask? I'll be giving my freebies away of course. Tis better to give than to receive...besides, as much as I love to bake I could never use that much condensed milk.

ps-sorry again for the picture. My computer is so weird. You have no idea what it has been doing to my typing. It takes me forever to adjust what it does to the formatting on each post but I still haven't figured the pictures out. My computer does NOT play well with others.

My post election shopping trip!

With a grande diet coke and a piece of halloween candy in hand I ventured out to shake my post election blues

Rite aid was out of the gum toothbrushes that are free after SCR this week so we were going to go to cvs when I realized the rebate error. Bummer. I'll figure something else out. Later.

Now, here's where I actually scored--walmart and a half score at target.

At walmart I got:

ronzoni rotini 1.50 (used 1/1)
HBO cereal 2.26 (used 2/1 pc)
nesquik 1.00 (used .75/1)
2 barilla piccolini 1.23 x 2 (used .55/2)
goody ouchless 2.12 (used 2/1 pc)
2 glade glass scent 2.66x2 (used bogo& 2/1 peelie)
3 glade refills 2.00x3 (used b2g1 & 1.50 pc)
Total 20.66
Total after coupons $6.20

not bad especially since I got 5 glade candles which I love to have on hand when you need a quick gift. BTW tis the season to get candles. There are deals everywhere. Speaking of candle deals, make sure you sign up at Yankee Candle for emails. They send me the best coupons!

Then we went to Target and I had planned to get some more glade scented oil candles but they were out so I opted for 2 jumbo packs of capri suns and used my 2 1/1 TC's. So I now have 4 boxes of juice boxes for $7. That's 1.75 per box and they're normally about $2.50-3 here.

cvs correction

Ok gals. I just realized that our local cvs is only doing 1 rebate per household for the crest. Other locals are getting up to 4! (I guess they have poor hygiene!!) So the first deal won't work for us. So as always remember to check your local papers because prices and rebates will vary.

As a side: if you are near a cvs with a limit of 4 make sure you use a 3/15 cvs coupon with that deal and spend only $7 oop and make your $14 ecbs!

Freebies for voters

I saw this post on a blog fav of mine and must share the freebies. Wear your "I voted" sticker to these stores and get some grub (thanks money saving mom for the list)

Krispy Kreme is giving away a free donut to all customers who wear an "I Voted" sticker. This promotion appears to be valid all day long, however, I'd call your local store to make sure they are participating. (More details here.)

Chick-Fil-A is giving away a free chicken sandwich to all customers who wear a "I Voted" sticker. This promotion appears to be up to individual stores and is not a nationwide thing. Call your local store to see if they are participating.

Ben and Jerry's is giving away a free scoop of ice cream from 5-8 p.m. to everyone who votes. (More details here. Thanks, Diaper Diaries!)

Kroger deals this week...there are tons

Target: Glade candle money maker!!!

So I went on a hunch today to Target and tried to score some Glade candles. I had some success and some failure. I the ones that work are all $2.50 in stores.

Here's the deal:
buy and 4 glade candles (holiday scent only) and get a $5 GC!!! SO here's what I did.

4 scented oil candles @2.50
used 2 bogo pc and
1 2/1 SIC
total oop $3 and I got my $5 GC

They didn't have enough for me to do it again with the scented oil candles so I tried to do it with 2 jar candles and 2 refills but it didn't work. Technically you are supposed to get In Style magazine with it but I was able to do it without.

My cashier was able to get it to work with 4 jar candles. If that works for you then use 1/1 SIC's.

I will go and get more scented oil candles because they make great gifts for teachers.

here's where to find glade coupons:
Glade website
inside candle boxes ( In know some have bogo refill coupons in them)
SIC
PC -you can print 2 here

this deal goes thru 12/31!!! And you have to buy each 4 in a seperate transaction or it won't work.

Old Navy $2 sale

I heard on the radio that Old Navy is having a $2 and under clearance!!! Time to stock up for those prices.

Let's go Krogering!!!

Well slap me silly folks. I did some much needed grocery shopping last night. And boy did I find me some dealicious deals!!! My kroger was having a HUGE clearance. There were buckets upon buckets of markdown items. Here's what I got...keep in mind that 2 kids shampoo and a jumbo pack of pez are not in the picture

With some quick math I figured that this all retailed around $110 but after my coupons (yes I stacked clearance prices with coupons) I paid only $14!!! That's about almost 90% off folks!!!

Here's the rundown of my favorites

chapstick 1.79--.25

3 little swimmers 7.99--1.99
used 3 1.50/1 pc

2 covergirl mascara 7.99--1.75
used bogo pgesaver coupon

triaminic strips 5.79--.99 used 1/1 sic

2 gillett razors 5.99
used 2 2/1 pgesaver coupons and 2 3/1 sic

schick razors 5.99--1.75 used bogo coupons (they didn't have another so they gave me 1.75 off anyways!)

**I don't know if all kroger's are having this type of clearance but it is definitely worth the trip to find out.

**If you have not already loaded coupons to your card go here to sign up and load them. These coupons are way better than the one's in the paper and you can still stack them with Kroger coupons and SIC's and PC's.
